WHAT'S NEW IN GASTROENTEROLOGY?
Upper GI Endoscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. This means the test enables a diagnosis to be made upon which specific treatment can be given. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis. An Endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube with a tiny video camera and light on the end. By adjusting the various controls on the endoscope, your doctor can safely guide the instrument to carefully examine the inside lining of the upper digestive system. The high-quality picture from the endoscope is shown on a TV monitor; it gives a clear, detailed view. In many cases, upper GI Endoscopy is a more precise examination than X-ray studies.
Effective Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a set of gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, discomfort, cramping and bloating occurring together due to the abnormal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract (usually the large intestine). IBS is a chronic disease. While it can be mild and manageable for some, for others it can severely affect their quality of life and interfere with daily activities. With effective treatment and regular monitoring of symptoms, the condition can be controlled and your quality-of-life will improve.
